at present, some colleges and universities permit their students to select lecturers of some courses by themselves. after all, some teachers are very boring and some required subjects are probably not very practical.
several fundamental factors are considered when students selecting their lecturers. first and foremost, a good instructor should be able to interest and motivate their classes. students will learn more quickly and thoroughly from a teacher who makes the subject matter come alive for them. what is more, an outstanding tutor should spend time and energy organizing and preparing the lessons.
good as selecting lecturers is, it also has its own disadvantages. on the one hand, if students can choose their own curriculum, they can generally do better in subjects that interest them. on the other hand, given the high pressure to make good grades, many students will misuse the opportunity and naturally choose the easier subjects rather than the harder ones. it is high time that we attached importance to this issue.

there has been a heated discussion about whether to keep the college english test band 4(6) in the universities. some people argue that the test has become an obstacle to the teaching of english on campuses, while others maintain that the advantages of the test outweigh its disadvantages.
as far as the first group of people are concerned, they give the following arguments. for one thing, many students spend most of their time preparing for the test, therefore their focus is not on learning english better but on getting a high mark. for another, many teachers don’t concentrate on how to improve the students’ abilities. they only care how many of their students can pass the test.
however, there are many people who believe the test should stay. to begin with, the test is the most effective way to measure how well the students have learned english. what’s more, we can come up with some ways to lessen the negative effect.
as far as i am concerned, each side is right in a certain way. we have to keep the test so students will have better motivation to learn english. however, we can’t attach too much importance to the scores of the test. after all, it is just a test, isn’t it? (212 words)

away from net-bar campaign
it has been reported that a middle school in xuzhou city has recently launched a campaign named “away from net-bar”. more than a thousand students have signed for their solemn promise that they will not spend a single minute in the net-bars. with the nearing of the summer vacation, this campaign is especially meaningful for the healthy development of the minors.
the internet has brought people great convenience in getting information, entertainment and contact with others, and it has also benefited some businessmen, especially the owner of net-bars. while it is true that most net-bars are running legally, it is also true that some are offering unhealthy programs that involve violence and sex content. since most middle school students are prone to be influenced and they can hardly tell which bars are doing well and which ones are not, it is only advisable that they stay away from all. besides , staying away from net-bars also does good to students’ physical health. by passively sitting too long in front of the computer screen, both their eyesight and physique suffer.
obviously , the away from net-bars campaign is an activity that is worth advocating and it merits other schools’ reference

a chance of a lifetime生命的机遇"this is a chance of a life time," i declared to my friend stacy as i locked the door of my office and left the restaurant i managed. "it's every twenty-seven-year-old woman's dream to live in new york city, and in a few months i'll know if i get the transfer.""这可是我生命中的一次机遇,"我对斯泰西说。
说着,我锁上办公室的门,离开了我经营多年的饭店。在纽约生活,这可是每个27岁的女人所梦寐以求的还有几个月我就可以知道能否获准迁入。
i watched the moonlight glisten on the waters of laguna beach. "i'll miss it here, but living in the big apple is everything i've ever wanted - a dream come true." 我很留恋这里,可住在纽约是长久以来我心中惟一的梦想--如今,美梦就要成真了!"we met a group of our friends at a local cafe, and i jabbered on about the possibility of my move. laughter erupted from a nearby table. i watched as a handsome man captured the attention of his friends with his engaging story. his broad, warm smile and air of confidence held me in a trance. stacy nudged me. "you're staring,在街上的一家小咖啡店里,我们遇到了一群朋友,我便和他们闲聊着我可能要走的事。
这时,邻近的一张桌子爆发出阵阵笑声。我应声望去,看见一个英俊的男人正在给他的朋友讲一个引人人胜的故事。
他那坦率、温暖的`笑容和自信的模样让我不由地发怔。斯泰西轻轻地捅了我一下,说道:"嘿,米歇尔,你发什么呆,好像着魔了一样。
"michelle, and about to drool." "wow," i whispered. i watched the gorgeous guy push up the sleeves of his bulky sweater. everyone at his table had their eyes fixed on him. "that's the man i want to marry." "yeah, right," stacy droned. "tell us more about where you'd like to live in new york, because we all plan to visit you there when you land this job. " as i spoke my gaze drifted back to the debonair man.
three months later my friends and i gathered at the same restaurant. "to life in the big apple!" they cheered as we tapped our glasses together. "my chance of a lifetime!" we talked for hours. i told them of my plan to save money by moving out of my beach cottage and renting a room for the few remaining months. our friend offered, "i have a fellow south african friend who is considering renting one of the four bedrooms in his house. his name is barry. a great guy." he scribbled on a napkin. "this is his number. he's a forty-two-year-old confirmed bachelor. says he's much too busy being a single dad to be a husband."
i made an appointment to see the room the same day. i approached the entrance of the spacious house, and the door opened. "you must be michelle," he said. he pushed up the sleeves of his bulky sweater and flashed his handsome smile. it was the man from the restaurant months before --- the man i wanted to marry.当天,我便预约去看房子。
我正朝那所大房子走去时,门开了。"你一定是米歇尔,"他说着,卷起他宽松外套的衣袖,脸上漾起迷人的微笑。
这不就是几个月前饭店里的那个男人--那个我想要嫁的男人!i stood staring, my mouth gaping, hoping i wasn't drooling. you are michelle, aren't you? " he said, coaxing me out of my trance." would you like to see the room?""你就是米歇尔,对吗?"他打断了我的思绪,说道:"你想看看房间吗?"a chance of a lifetime生命的机遇(2)i followed him through a tour of the house, then accepted when he offered me a cup of tea. barry had a sophisticated kindness about him and listened attentively as i chattered nervously about myself. his silver-rimmed glasses accented a few gray streaks in his dark hair. soon, his warm, inviting smile put me at ease, and we spent the next two hours talking casually. ultimately, i decided not to take the room and reluctantly bade him good-bye.

should college students live on campus
there are an increasing number of students who choose to live off campus. parents and university administrations understandably reacted differently. they voiced concerns about security and the threat of off-campus lifestyles getting out of control. however, college students have their own reasons for their choices.
some students prefer to live on campus for the following reasons. first, campus residents are closer to classes, the library, and other resources, so they are more likely to succeed in college and complete their bachelor’s degree in four years. furthermore, living in a dorm is a great opportunity to meet all kinds of new people and develop relationships with them, so students living on campus are more sociable. last but not the least, living on campus is cheaper and more convenient. often times, off-campus housing is more expensive than on-campus housing and while living on campus, you don’t have to worry about monthly rent payments and utility bills.
some others choose to live off campus because they believe living off campus they are more independent, with more privacy and a lot more quiet time. living off campus gives them freedom from those dorm rules and allow them to set their own. the extra space also means that one can probably find a quiet place to study in the convenience of his own home.
as for me, i’m a faithful supporter of the former group because i, living on campus myself, have witnessed and enjoyed all the convenience and happiness of doing so. to me, living on campus undoubtedly adds an important element to the complete college experience.

in recent years, the volunteering spirit has spread widely among the public, especially among youngsters. from olympic games to urban communities, many people are seen to offer free help. volunteering is of tremendous benefit to those in need. for example, hundreds of thousands of volunteers played an active role in the recent quake-hit yushu area: they offered medical and psychological aid to the victims in the relief work. on the other hand, volunteering is beneficial to the volunteers themselves too. involved in volunteering activities, people are exposed to new circumstancesj and they can learn how to work well in a team and how to improve their interpersonal skills, all of which are critical for their career development. in my view, we should all join in volunteering work as long as we have spare time. that doesn’t necessarily mean that we all volunteer in regions struck by natural disasters. there are many people eise who need our help, . the old or the sick in the near nursing home. little by eittje, we are sure to help make the world better.
